As I return to the Pike for the break, I thought now would be a good time to look at the pros and cons of the Pike.
Pros of working at the Pike:
*The way people mysteriously get friendlier and happier after 7:30 p.m.
*Thunderstorms + HUGE wide open highway = AMAZING VIEW
*People who let their kids hand us the ticket and money :)
*Working in 15x and banking out at 9:30!
*Cookout days = extra breaks and tons of food!
*Rubber band fights in the lanes during sloooow nights
*Tips!
*People who drive with pets! :)
Cons of working at the Pike:
-The "dump & run": tossing the change in the booth and speeding off before you have a chance to count it (or say hello)... extra minus points if they give us the wrong amount
-People who need reciepts for .50
-People who can't find their ticket and spend 3 hours looking for it, holding up traffic.
-People who don't have a ticket (or are convinced they never got one)
-People who put the ticket in their mouth... DO YOU KNOW WHERE THAT HAS BEEN?!?!?! Plus we don't want to touch your spit. Keep it in hand, please.
-People who don't know where they are going (especially if they ask us which way it is to the Cape... it's written on the sign, open your eyes.)
-People who don't have money. Would you really get on a TOLL ROAD without money?!
-"Automatic release": as soon as they think you might have their money in your hand, they speed off.
-Pennies... they always give us 9 instead of 10!!!!!!
-People who can't figure out FAST LANE... either they try to exit through a cash lane, convinced that they didn't see the signs that were posted for the past 5 miles, or people who try to pay the fast lane. Sometimes they dump their money into the flower pot... how is that helpful??
-People who pull up to the toll booth on the other side of the lane, so you have to put on the ugly orange vest, get out of the booth, and get their money.
-While we're on it... THE UGLY ORANGE VEST.
-Changing 20, 50, and 100 dollar bills... usually for a toll of .50- do these people realize we do all the math in our heads?
-People who are on the phone. Can you BE any more obnoxious?
-People who are pissed off because of the traffic. Try dealing with EVERY SINGLE pissed off person instead. It's much more fun.
-3x and 11x (the "truck lane" and "car lane", respectively) They suck, and you make $2300 a night. And no tips.
-Naked men.
Notice that one outweighs the other... (*sigh*) So wish me luck tomorrow on my first day back!
